Letters to Lucilius, I: On Time

Do this, my dear Lucilius: claim yourself for yourself. Gather and keep the time that until now was taken from you, stolen from you, or simply slipped away. Be convinced that it is just as I write to you: some hours are snatched from us, others are stolen from us, and others slip away.

The most shameful loss is the one that comes from carelessness. A great part of life slips away from us while doing wrong, the greater part while doing nothing, and the whole of it while doing something else. Whom will you show me who puts a value on time, who values the day, who understands that he is dying every day?

So then, dear Lucilius, do what you write to me that you are doing: hold on to every hour. That way you will depend less on tomorrow, if you take hold of today. While we put off life, life runs past.
